Philip Gill

Name:

Philip Gill

Dr Philip Gill’s career in Meteorology extends back some 15 years and he is currently Operational Verification Manager at the Met Office, responsible for ensuring that the products delivered to customers are validated according to customer expectations and helping customers understand the benefits and limitations of weather forecast products. During his career, he spent 5 years developing and validating products for the Aviation Industry, a particular recent success being a partnership with the World Aviation Forecast Centre in Washington to ensure that Clear Air Turbulence Products issued by the two WAFC (in the UK and the US) are consistent.

Whilst also publishing significant papers in the field of aviation meteorology, Drs Potts and Gill were also instrumental in preparing and producing a special Issue of Meteorological Applications focusing on developments in aviation meteorology, published in January 2014, as a current overview and update of topical issues in this field.

For this contribution to an often overlooked aspect of applied meteorology, but one which is relevant to the Journal and of high importance to the meteorological community, it is proposed to award the Meteorological Applications Editor’s Prize jointly to Drs Potts and Gill.
