Current Employment:

I am a hydrometeorologist with 23 years’ experience in water management and hydrometeorology. I have global experience in hydrometeorology, climate change impacts, flood forecasting and rural water supply in developing countries (UK, USA, Algeria, Tanzania and Uganda). Recent work includes: leading training for all Operational Hydrometeorologists at the Flood Forecasting Centre of England & Wales (FFC), development of the FFC’s Extreme Rainfall Alert service, leading research into probabilistic flood forecasting, climate change resilience and extreme weather resilience. In recent projects for UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) I have led research into changes in high intensity, short duration rainfall by making use of the Met Office’s new 1.5km resolution climate model. This is leading to the development of a new rainfall perturbation tool that is providing synthetic future time series rainfall by perturbing historic time series data. I sit on the UKCP18 Non-Government User Group advising the UKCP18 project team on selection of data and model scenarios. I am a Technical Director at JBA Consulting Ltd with responsibilities in flood forecasting, hydrometeorology and climate change resilience.

Recent work:

Hydrometeorology training of the Flood Forecasting Centre (2016)

Climate change impacts on short duration rainfall for the UK Water Industry (2014-17)

Weather Resilience Decision-support for UK national infrastructure owners (2016-17)

Advisory Board member on Flood Forecasting from Intense Rainfall (NERC Research Programme) (2013-18)

Applying Probabilistic Flood Forecasting in Flood Incident Management (SC090032) (Environment Agency) (2009-12)

Climate Change and Population Growth Effects on New York City Sewer and Water Systems (for NYCDEP). (2010-2012)

Expertise:

I was formerly Hydrology Team Leader within the UK Met Office (2000 – 2005) where I was involved in climate change impacts and flood forecasting projects in the UK and internationally. I have key experience in weather radar, NWP for flood forecasting and extreme events, and Hadley Centre climate models, particularly the RCM. I lead Halcrow’s initiative in flood forecasting and in climate change adaptation and have managed and provided technical input to multiple climate change and flood forecasting projects for clients including Defra, the Environment Agency, SEPA, UK water companies, Office of Public Works (Ireland), the New York Department of Environmental Protection and the Algerian National Meteorological Office. I represented the UK Met Office at the World Meteorological Organisation’s Commission for Hydrology meeting in 2004.
