ABSTRACT | Extratropical cyclones are the main natural hazard for Western Europe in the winter. They cause an average of $2 billion of damage per year, with this being enhanced for multiple cyclones affecting the same region in a very short time after one another. This is known as clustering. In this talk, the drivers of these events were discussed for various regions of Europe as well as how the recurrent influence of multiple extreme cyclones can lead to high impacts. Furthermore the large-scale atmospheric drivers of these events was presented and also discussed as to how these events may change as a result of climate change.
