To provide forecasts at the convective scale it is necessary to assimilate high-resolution observations that capture small-scale meteorological phenomena. Every year approximately £2 billion is spent acquiring observational data, yet only about 5% of these data are used to initiate a forecast; in addition there are inexpensive large datasets of opportunity that could be utilized.
This meeting will provide insight on how to improve the use of the current plethora of high-resolution observations and look to future assimilation of big data.
