The winning photograph was taken by Richard Tabony during the early afternoon of 30th November 2008. It was taken above Loch Venachar in the Trossachs and was chosen for its many depths and features. Starting in the background coming forward, we see high cirrus, cumulus of the type to produce snow in the future, and a distinct snow line on the mountains. Further forward in the valley it is a separate story, with a layer of stratus cloud or lifted fog at the top of the stable layer, marked across the valley floor with rime on the vegetation. There is also what appears to be fog on the loch itself, and the layer between the inversion and snow line appears to be quiet meteorologically.
