In May 2009 joined National Centre for Atmospheric Science in the School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds as Professor of Atmospheric Science and NCAS Head of Strategic Partnerships. 27 years with the UK Meteorological Office in various research, operations and commercial services posts, including branch director posts; satellite meteorology; nowcasting and satellite applications; operational instrumentation. Head of commercial R&D consultancy in Meteorological Office. In September 1995 joined University of Salford as professor of Environmental Remote Sensing, became Director, Telford Research Institute 1997 and was appointed Dean of Faculty of Science, Engineering and Environment in 1998-2002. President, Royal Meteorological Society 2004-2006.
